Tiles & Tea Club Announces Inaugural Mahjong Residency at The Country Club at Woodmore
New partnership establishes the first resident Mahjong club at The Country Club at Woodmore and creates a new home for one of the region’s growing communities of women of color around the game
MITCHELLVILLE, Md. — May 12, 2026 — Tiles & Tea Club today announced the launch of its inaugural residency at The Country Club at Woodmore, establishing Tiles & Tea as the first resident Mahjong club in the Country Club’s history.
Founded by Natalie Madeira Cofield and Shunda Murray Leecost, Tiles & Tea Club is building a new kind of Mahjong community centered on connection, culture, strategy, and play. The Woodmore residency will provide a dedicated home for recurring Mahjong programming, including instruction, social play, curated events, and opportunities for players of all experience levels to gather and build community.
The partnership also represents an important step in expanding representation within the growing American Mahjong community. Tiles & Tea was founded with an intentional focus on creating a welcoming and culturally inclusive environment where women of color can learn, play, connect, and see themselves represented at the Mahjong table.
“We created Tiles & Tea because we saw an opportunity to build community around a game that is strategic, social, and incredibly rich in tradition,” said Natalie Madeira Cofield, Co-Founder of Tiles & Tea Club. “Our residency at The Country Club at Woodmore gives us the opportunity to create something lasting — a place where women can come together regularly, learn something new, build relationships, and simply enjoy being at the table together.”
Beginning May 12, Tiles & Tea will establish recurring programming at The Country Club at Woodmore designed to make Mahjong approachable for beginners while also providing opportunities for experienced players to connect and play.
“For us, Mahjong is about the relationships that develop around the table just as much as the game itself,” said Shunda Murray Leecost, Co-Founder of Tiles & Tea Club. “We want someone who has never touched a Mahjong tile before to feel just as welcome as someone who has been playing for years. This residency allows us to build that kind of community consistently.”
The residency represents the beginning of a broader vision for Tiles & Tea Club. Through partnerships, instruction, special events, private experiences, and organized play, the organization plans to grow its community throughout the Washington metropolitan region while helping introduce a new generation of women to American Mahjong.
“Having a permanent home at Woodmore is significant for us,” Cofield added. “We aren't interested in simply hosting Mahjong events. We are building a club, a community, and a culture around the table.”
